The Book of Kells (Irish: Leabhar Cheanannais) (Dublin, Trinity College Library, MS A. I. (58), sometimes known as the Book of Columba) is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament together with various prefatory texts and tables. It was created by Celtic monks ca. 800 or slightly earlier. The text of the Gospels is largely drawn from the Vulgate, although it also includes several passages drawn from the earlier versions of the Bible known as the Vetus Latina. It is a masterwork of Western calligraphy and represents the pinnacle of Insular illumination. It is also widely regarded as Ireland's finest national treasure.
THE SECRET OF KELLS (working title: Brendan and the Secret of Kells) is a 2009 Irish-French-Belgian animated fantasy film by Cartoon Saloon that premiered on 8 February 2009, at the 59th Berlin International Film Festival. It went into wide release in Belgium and France on 11 February, and in the Republic of Ireland on 3 March. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. I am a big fan of this animation movie!
This movie features the most fantastic drawings, music, and story. I've always been fascinated by the Irish monk towers. I can even see one from my bedroom window! In my earlier post about Glendalough, I also have a picture of the tower. I've always wondered how people lived in it, how they got in, etc.
This movie is a piece of Irish history and culture.
